¡°How hot was the DRAM market in the first quarter?¡± asks market analyst iSuppli.
The answer was that DRAM sales during the first three months of 2010 were greater than during the first half of last year.
The numbers speak for themselves.
According to the iSuppli figures, worldwide DRAM sales revenues in the first quarter of almost $9.5bn were 180% up on the first quarter in 2009.
The Q1 figure was also 9.7% up on the last quarter Q4 2009.
The reason for the sales surge in the first quarter was due to ¡°stronger-than-anticipated demand for PCs and tight supplies,¡± said Mike Howard, senior analyst, DRAM, for iSuppli.
¡°This strong performance bodes well for continued growth in 2010, possibly paving the way for the industry¡¯s greatest year in history,¡± said Howard.
This is against a background which says that normally the first quarter is the weakest period of the year for DRAM revenue, as sales and prices decline following the strong PC buying season in the fourth quarter.
¡°The first quarter of 2010 has positioned the industry for a bull run, the likes of which haven¡¯t been seen more than a decade,¡± said Howard.
In Q1 2010 this hasn¡¯t happened. The DRAM market is in new territory.
